Adults

The aim of this module is to provide adults (members of the general public) with the knowledge and skills for the prevention, preparedness, and response to natural disasters.

This e-learning module is divided in the following units:

This unit will provide adults with the knowledge and skills for the prevention, preparedness and response to a flood.

This unit will provide adults with the knowledge and skills for the prevention, preparedness and response to a storm.

This unit will provide adults with the knowledge and skills for the prevention, preparedness and response to a heat wave situation.

This unit will provide adults with the knowledge and skills for the prevention, preparedness and response to a wildfire.

Each Unit is divided in 3 parts:

Part 1: Prevention:
The need to be aware of risks they may encounter within their local area (i.e. the places where they live, work and visit on a regular basis).

Part 2: Preparedness
A- Practical Actions/Advice: The need to be aware of how to prepare for a natural disaster. What information do they need? Where can they find this information? What preparations can they take to help them react safely and effectively during a natural disaster?
B- Warning and Information: The need to understand how members of the general public will be informed of a forthcoming or ongoing natural disaster. What communication methods will be used? Where can members of the public find information? Who can provide information and assistance and what information and assistance can they provide?

Part 3: Response
A- Practical Actions/Advice: The need to know what to do and what not to do if there is a natural disaster or other emergency. Ideally this will be documented within an individual Action Plan for a property, like a Home Emergency Plan.
B- How can they help?: The need to maintain awareness of what is going on around them and other people they might be able to help by passing on information or advice (i.e. neighbours who are unaware of a flood or other warning).
C-Safety: The need to know how to stay safe during a natural disaster. What should they do and what should they not do if there is a flood? For example, if flood water is entering a property and they cannot escape, they need to move to the top floor of the building.

Each unit is planned to be delivered in 3 hours. This entire e-learning module will therefore provide 12 hours of education on the prevention preparedness and response to natural disasters to adults.
